The tradition of presenting gifts to commemorate wedding anniversaries can be traced back to Ancient Rome and medieval Germany. By the 18th century, however, there is more concrete evidence of such customs in German culture. It was common for friends of a married couple to present the wife with a silver wreath to celebrate 25 years of marriage, while those who reached their 50th anniversary were honored with a gold wreath.
This practice gained widespread popularity in the late 19th century, particularly during the Victorian era—a time when romantic love became the prevailing foundation for marriage. Within this cultural shift, the exchange of anniversary gifts, whether between spouses or from well-wishers, became a meaningful tradition that reinforced the significance of enduring love and commitment.
