Early Victorian Era Citrine Stone Vinaigrette Locket

Early Victorian era vinaigrette locket.  Beautifully cut citrine stone covers an intricately pierced floral panel that opens to reveal a compartment within. This style of locket is called a vinaigrette. It was a common accessory with the elite classes of the time. A bit of perfume soaked cloth would be placed beneath the pierced panel and allow the wearer to open the locket and enjoy the scent or mask unpleasant odors in the environment.

There is sufficient room to place a photograph or tiny keepsake inside the locket panel.

The reverse side of locket has an engine turned panel as well has hand chased details on the frame and bail in 18k gold. English in origin. Circa 1850.
